AMA Drone Report 12.07.17: AMA Supports GoFly, ALPA v UAS, EU Drone Regs
Tue, Dec 12,2017 08:34:06PM EST
Also: Drones Hunt Pythons, MI State Regs, Thanksgiving Drone Flying, Drone Collision Report A little outside our normal coverage responsibilities, nonetheless, we’re intrigued by AMA’s newest agreement... AMA has partnered with Boeing to support GoFly, an incentive competition that encourages innovators to create a safe and easy-to-use personal flying device. “AMA is excited to partner with GoFly in support of this creative initiative,” said Dave Mathewson, AMA executive director. “AMA has always supported advancements in aviation technology, and we look forward to witnessing the success of the GoFly program.” Following the release of an FAA directed study showing that UAS may damage aircraft more than bird strikes during collisions, Capt. Tim Canoll, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l renewed the union's call for Congress to give the FAA the authority to regulate hobby drones. Mind you, the narrative adopts invokes is not altogether correct nor firmly verified and is obviously designed to appease the airline community... The drone regulatory attacks continue. The Transport Committee of the European Parliament has agreed to draft drone regulations that would make sweeping changes in how small unmanned aircraft are regulated on the continent. Under the agreement reached recently, drones that are classified as "dangerous"would have to be registered with the EU. A "dangerous"drone would be defined as one that could cause significant harm to people by impacting them, or one that presents a risk to privacy, security or the environment. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!

Airborne 12.11.17: Pilatus PC-24 Cert, VerdeGo Aero, Canada Nixes Hornets

Also: Engine Coatings Facility, Wrong Runway At JFK, ATR 72-600 Flight Sim, Regional Airline Association Pilatus has obtained type certificates from the FAA and EASA for the first ever Swiss business jet. Certification of the Super Versatile Jet prepares the ground for initial customer deliveries, which will see the PC-24 business jet take off from Central Switzerland for its entry on the global market. The PC-24 development project was officially announced in 2013, but work on the Super Versatile Jet has in fact been in progress for the past eleven and a half years. Erik Lindbergh, grandson of famed aviators Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, has announced the formation of VerdeGo Aero, an innovative new aerospace company with a mission to provide the upcoming multibillion-dollar urban transportation market with a safe, clean, and quiet hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft that can fly piloted or autonomously. Boeing's trade dispute with Bombardier has led the Canadian government to cancel its plans to buy 18 Super Hornet jet fighters. Boeing has accused Bombardier of dumping airliners on the U.S. Market. It filed a complaint with the U.S. Commerce department, which imposed a 300 percent tariff on Bombardier's C-Series airliners. Boeing claimed that the Canadian government illegally subsidized the single-aisle jets and was offering the airplanes at "absurdly low"prices to U.S. carriers. Also: NLR Signs Agreement, QinetiQ, Big Bend Community College, 2nd Annual UAS Conference, Tigershark UAS Kicking off a series of tests for its capstone project, the UAV Storm Chaser team at Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University completed its first Remote Controlled (RC) flight of a UAV on Nov. 17. Considered a “huge success,” the RC fight was used to demonstrate “all of the communication components of the UAV linking together properly, to calibrate the motors and motor controller, to get flight time, and to go through the process of setting up all of the parameters in mission planner.” The UAV Storm Chaser team is one of five teams within Embry-Riddle’s Electrical, Computer, Software, and Systems Engineering (ECSSE) Capstone Class, which is a two-semester class that provides students in their final year with project experience that mirrors what they will experience in their respective fields of work. The status of military drone operators is about to be upgraded... The U.S Marine Corps has authorized a Drone Operator insignia that can be affixed to the uniforms of enlisted operators. The approval was one of several published by the service in late November. It is part of a DOD effort intended to recognize the growing importance of the new community. Virginia Tech and Malawian teams have used a fully autonomous UAS to conduct tests at the UNICEF drone testing corridor in Kasungu, Malawi, which opened back in July. Virginia Tech says that “the flights by a fully autonomous aircraft designed in mechanical engineering’s Unmanned Systems Lab set several records in Malawi,” including the longest cross-country UAS flight, the first flight of an aircraft created by Malawians, and the first delivery of a payload from a health clinic. On ten days, a total of around 100 flights were made without incident over the city of Zurich. Following the release of an FAA directed study showing that unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) may damage aircraft more than bird strikes during collisions, Capt. Tim Canoll, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l renewed the union's call for Congress to give the FAA the authority to regulate hobby drones, though the narrative he invokes is not altogether correct nor firmly verified. The Air Force has selected Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, as the preferred location for hosting a new MQ-9 Reaper Wing with 24 remotely piloted aircraft. Vandenberg AFB, California, is considered a reasonable alternative. The wing will be composed of an operations group with mission control elements as well as a launch and recovery capability, and a maintenance group. "We selected Tyndall Air Force Base because it was the best location to meet the unique requirements of the MQ-9 Reaper,"Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson said.
