Airborne 06.18.18: XP-82 Twin Mustang, Tuskegee Airmen, Supersonic Reg Change
Wed, Jun 20,2018 09:52:44PM EST
Also: Thunderbirds/Snowbirds To N TX, AK Mid-Air, Gogo AVANCE L5, Sikorsky's New Parts Supply Site The restorers of a North American XP-82 “Twin Mustang,” one of the most unusual fighter/escort aircraft ever deployed by the U.S. military, are aiming to make EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 its first public appearance to celebrate completion of an arduous 10-year restoration project. The 10-year restoration project in Douglas, Georgia, began after aircraft restorer Tom Reilly discovered the complete airframe on a farm in Ohio. Reilly then scoured the earth seeking engines, propellers and a multitude of other XP-82 parts to continue the restoration. The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron, America’s tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, has announced that Tuskegee Airmen Col. Charles McGee and Lt. Col. George Hardy will join them as special guests at EAA AirVenture. The group’s RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit mobile movie theater will be a featured attraction at the event’s KidVenture “Future Pilot” activity program to help inspire the next generation of aerospace professionals. The FAA plans to propose an update to its rules governing supersonic flight over the U.S. in light of developments in SST technology. In a notice posted on the FAA website, the agency says the proposal would update and add to the noise certification rules in 14 CFR part 36, subparts A, D, and O to accommodate noise certification of new supersonic aircraft. Currently, 14 CFR part 36, Noise Standards: Aircraft Type and Airworthiness Certification does not apply to supersonic aircraft other than the Concorde. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!

Airborne-Unmanned 06.19.18: Mexican UAV Fights Crime, Spokane Drones, Ikhana!
Wed, Jun 20,2018 09:52:35PM EST
Also: K2 & Robotic Skies, Autonomous Aerial Vehicles Competition, K State Grad Cert, Commercial Drones at JFK A drone operated by authorities in Ensenada, Mexico, led to a significant decrease in overall crime in the city. Ensenada police say that over a few months, their single DJI Inspire 1 drone has led to more than 500 arrests and contributed to an overall 10 percent drop in the crime rate, including a 30 percent drop in residential robberies. Over the past four months, the drone has flown an average of 25 sorties per day. The drone is deployed based on 911 call volume. It is operated from a centralized control room using software developed by Cape, a California-based company. The city of Spokane, WA will soon implement a program using a drone to assist in infrastructure inspections and construction projects. Local lawmakers approved the plan last week. Officials say using the aircraft will help the city complete projects more quickly while saving money for the taxpayers. NASA’s remotely-piloted Ikhana aircraft, based at the agency’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, CA, successfully flew its first mission in the National Airspace System without a safety chase aircraft last Tuesday. The FAA granted NASA special permission to conduct this flight under the authority of a Certificate of Waiver or Authorization. The flight took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California and entered controlled air space almost immediately. Ikhana flew into the Class-A airspace, where commercial airliners fly, just west of Edwards at an altitude of about 20,000 feet. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!

AMA Drone Report 06.14.18: AMA Expo W Drone Races, Ag v Drones, Kitty Hawk Flyer
Wed, Jun 20,2018 09:52:26PM EST
Also: Drone Rotor Safety System, Birds Inspire Drone Design, UAVs Stop Crime, Fat Shark 101 As previously noted, the upcoming AMA Expo West Tradeshow not only starts early, but in an altogether upgraded location that will allow for massive expansion of this intensely cool event. After a number of years in Ontario, California; the highly anticipated 2018 rendition of AMA Expo West will show up in new digs and a somewhat different time of the year. This year, the AMA Expo West team will appear this November 2-4, 2018 at the Fairplex Exposition Center, in Pomona, California. Now, though, we can get even more excited about the fact that MultiGP drone races are now a featured part of the event roster! With more than a million UAVs registered with the FAA, it is vitally important for UAV operators to be aware of agricultural aircraft operations this growing season -- so says the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA). NAAA claims that there was also a highly publicized near miss between an ag aircraft and a UAV last summer in Iowa. As the ag pilot was passing through about 350 feet AGL, a quadcopter UAV flew under his wing before he could take evasive action. A multi-copter you can ride? That sure appears to be the thinking behind the Kitty Hawk Flyer... Mountain View, CA-based Kitty Hawk has posted images and video of the most recent version of its Flyer personal recreational vehicle on its website. The aircraft is essentially a drone scaled up to carry a person. Ten electric-powered rotors provide the lift and propulsion. The aircraft is currently designed to fly at up to 10 feet in altitude and up to 20 miles per hour. Depending on the weight of the occupant, battery life is estimated at 12-20 minutes. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!

Even more important, the highly-regarded AIP series will also be used as the flagship for a major industry initiative that will be announced at AirVenture… a program that has the potential to significantly contribute to a better and more powerful future for the aviation community.

Aero-News AirVenture Update: This Is So Cool! #OSH18COOL
Wed, Jun 20,2018 09:51:57PM EST
We Need YOUR Help To Find AND Celebrate The Coolest Stuff At EAA AirVenture 2018, #OSH18COOL Stuff that’s new is cool… we get it… that’s why we’re bringing our AirVenture Innovation Preview webcast to you on Saturday evening, July 21, to introduce the things that are new and unique at EAA AirVenture 2018. However, there is a lot of cool stuff that has little to do with being new stuff, but still deserves the designation of 'cool.'This is where we need your help. Despite the fact we have the largest news staff on the ground at AirVenture, our nearly 30 staffers still aren’t enough to find out what’s ‘really cool’ because what’s really cool is not all about us or what we think, it’s about what the thousands of people think who attend this great adventure known as AirVenture. To help us share what’s really cool to you, we are initiating our first time ‘#OSH18Cool’ program that allows you to tweet us about your opinion of what is ‘so cool.’ No matter what it is, if it’s cool to you, it’s cool to us.

Wed, Jun 20,2018 09:51:49PM EST
An Amazing Experience Awaits The Chosen Few... E-I-C Note: There's very little we can say yet, but there is a reason why this may be THE year to throw in with ANN to cover the extraordinary event that is OSHKOSH. Like in years past, we have something up our sleeves -- actually SEVERAL big somethings -- BUT, this year, they could be some of the biggest upgrades/surprises we've pulled off yet -- so we're going to be changing quite a few things about how we cover Oshkosh, as a result. IF YOU want to be a part of this unique adventure, speak up NOW, rather than later, because we're going to looking for the best volunteer folks we can find and are planning to do so ASAP. You've been warned (grin)....

Airborne 06.20.18: SubSonex Heads For RENO!, Elvis'BizJet, Chambliss-Red Bull
Wed, Jun 20,2018 06:39:37PM EST
Also: P&W Geared Turbofan, Tamarack Aerospace, King Air 350ER XP67A Upgrade, NATA Annual Mtg Sonex Aircraft will collaborate with High Performance Aircraft Group to showcase the SubSonex Personal Jet. The SubSonex debuted at this year's Pylon Racing Seminar (also known as "Rookie School") June 7-10 at Reno Stead airport in preparation for the National Championship Air Races this September. The SubSonex was taken through various flight scenarios by three-time Reno Gold champion Pete Zaccagnino. "The plane has been approved for racing, and now we have to get to work in preparation for training enough pilots to create a new race,"Zaccagnino said. "I believe we got eight flights in and everyone loved it. It was a blast on the course."A 1962 Lockheed Jetstar once owned by The King of Rock & Roll is back on the auction block about a year after being sold for $430,000. The online auction house IronPlanet lists the jet as a, "Custom private jet personally owned by Elvis Presley, the late American singer, complete with red velvet seats, gold plated accents, and red plush carpet.” "Elvis’ Jet has been privately owned for more than 35 years, becoming a tourist attraction where it sat on a runway in Roswell, New Mexico in the US. The jet is the only one of the three planes belonging to Elvis Presley, which is still privately owned, while the other two are owned by the Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee. Red Bull Air Race pilot Kirby Chambliss has come up with what may be a unique solution to the problem of how to practice a pylon-style race... without pylons. Earlier this month, he was seen over his hometown of Phoenix, AZ flying among a group of hot air balloons as he might during a race. Chambliss practiced his racing technique around the inflated balloons before they were launched, and once they left the ground, he climbed to a higher altitude and put on an impromptu one-man air show. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
