Aero-News: Quote of the Day (09.17.24)
Thu, Sep 19,2024 06:17:43PM EST
“Our industry is approaching a 30-year innovation cycle, and we have less than 25 years to decarbonize aviation. We need to develop new methods to get net zero aerospace technologies to market faster. It is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of our team that we’re able to roll out a 30-seat aircraft demonstrator with a brand-new propulsion system…in less than two years."Source: From a statement by Anders Forslund, co-founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace. Heart Aerospace unveiled the first full-scale demonstrator of its ES-30 model on September 12. The hybrid-electric airplane is a part of the company’s work towards making air travel more sustainable.

Airborne 09.16.24: Bristell Shooting, EAA v FAA, Boeing Strike!
Thu, Sep 19,2024 06:17:34PM EST
Also: Girls in Aviation Day, B-29 Doc Heads 4 Chino, C-17 Tail Cone Detaches, Bulgaria Airshow Accident One of two private aircraft that launched from Apatity Airport near Murmansk in the Russian Federation with filed flight plans to Arkhangelsk was apparently mistaken for a drone and was fired upon on September 11. The airspace surrounding the Murmansk and Apatity airports had been closed under a temporary flight restriction (TFR) due to Ukrainian drone activity. The EAA recently expressed its concern about a new FAA policy that would limit Phase I testing operations. The order, 8130.2K, is expected to take effect on October 27. Order 8130.2K cuts down on the number of airports permitted for Phase I flight testing. Boeing workers have gone on strike. This follows their 94% vote to reject the manufacturer’s proposed contract on September 12. The 33,000-worker strike is expected to freeze Boeing’s operations at its Seattle hub and cause major turbulence to its supply chain. The manufacturer’s last strike, in 2008, lasted eight weeks and cost the company about $100 million in deferred revenue per day. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unlimited!!!

Classic Aero-TV: CubCrafters NX Cub-A Stunning Effort To Build The ‘Perfect Cub'
Thu, Sep 19,2024 06:17:28PM EST
From 2021 (YouTube Version): We Were Blown Away At How Well The Nosewheel Was Adapted To The X Cub Airframe It should not be a secret to any one of you, that with thousands of hours of taildragger time, and only a few real scares in the process, does the thought of putting a nose wheel on a cub was anathema -- and potentially a deadly sin. That is... Until I flew the CubCrafters NX Cub. The CubCrafters folks are one of the most accomplished artisans in the Cub World, which is saying a lot, because the art and craft of building, rebuilding, and perfecting the Cub for the 21st century has become an almost religious pursuit among many.

The pace of test flights has a target of supersonic flight before the end of the year. The House of Representatives has passed H.R.2864: the Countering CCP Drones Act. This would add future equipment made by DJI technologies to the FCC’s Covered List on the premise that it poses a risk to U.S. national security. Sonex Aircraft announced that the JSX-1, the original SubSonex proof-of-concept personal jet prototype is now a resident of the EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh. The historic aircraft joins the original prototype Sonex and other aircraft designed by John Monnett. Also: Batavia Housing Encroachment, GAO Disses OA-1K, MTSU Incident, Iraq Buys H225Ms While everyone enjoys a classic warbird, there's a certain kind of buyer who looks fondly at the "Twin Mustang"of yore, one of the USAF's last piston fighters to serve. Truthfully, the XP-82 isn't quite as simple as a conjoined Mustang, despite its looks. Originally designed to provide fighter coverage to long-ranged bomber sorties, the XP-82 (later F-82 upon adoption) was born into the waning years of prop fighters. SpaceX expressed exasperation over the state of Flight 5, noting that "Starship and Super Heavy vehicles for Flight 5 have been ready to launch since the first week of August."The Flight 5 test will include their "most ambitious objective yet: attempt to return the Super Heavy booster to the launch site and catch it in mid-air."On September 10, a Delta Airbus A350 and an Endeavor Bombardier CRJ900 were involved in a collision on the ground at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The FAA reported that Delta Air Lines Flight 295 was taxiing for departure when its wingtip struck the vertical stabilizer of Endeavor Air Flight 5526, which was stopped on a nearby taxiway. They are now working with the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to start untethered tests. The Vertical VX4 features a 20% power-to-weight ratio increase from the previous model, allowing it to reach cruise speeds of 150 mph. Last month we described how the FAA sent notices of violations to 27 operators of UAS, along with proposed fines totaling more than $341,000. The largest fine was $32,700 for an operator whose drone caused a Wesley Chapel, Florida, Sheriff’s Office helicopter pilot to terminate a nighttime search for a burglary suspect to avoid a mid-air collision. Heart Aerospace unveiled the first full-scale demonstrator of its ES-30 model on September 12. The hybrid-electric airplane is a part of the company’s work towards making air travel more sustainable. The ANN team sent four of our top folks to the event and came away impressed with the quality of the aircraft we saw and flew and the fact that the industry is soldiering on despite the fact that MOSAIC has been oft delayed and is creating a lot of uncertainty among manufacturers and buyers. BIG Upgrades In The Works --- ANN Is Seeking EXCEPTIONAL New Staffers The last few years have been about as challenging a time as we can recall... but we survive (yeah, we're kinda surprised, too) and look forward to 2023 and what we see as a very rewarding (and yes, still challenging) new generation of activities at ANN. After some truly weird times during the pandemic, ANN continues to expand slowly, but surely, and we have some truly intriguing upgrades coming up over the next few months. In other words, we're about to grow again -- REALLY/TRULY -- and in some novel directions. The much-appreciated expansion of "AIRBORNE UNLIMITED", the incredible potential of the all-new digital edition of the SportPlane Resource Guide (eSPRG), some really exciting projects for SUN 'n FUN 2023, a new Aero-Reality series, and a number of upcoming books and projects are but the tip of the iceberg.
